In a cross-border effort to facilitate the widespread accessibility of African writing, Literandra Asbl and UK-based publisher Myriad Editions have joined forces to donate 200 copies of the New Daughters of Africa anthology to the Library of Africa and the African Diaspora (LOATAD), a Ghana-based library.
The donated copies of New Daughters of Africa will be available for lending from LOATAD and will be used in various literary projects and events organised by the library.
Literandra and Myriad Editions hope that this effort to divest and enlarge access to (and readership of) the anthology marks the beginning of a long-lasting collaboration, and shows other publishers and literary organisations that it can be done.
Dr. Alessandra Bassey, a Founding Editor at Literandra said: ‘It is not enough to just publish African voices in the West. It is equally paramount to honour those voices by making them available and accessible to African readers on the continent. This is what we have tried to achieve with this initiative.’
Candida Lacey, Publisher and Managing Director of Myriad Editions added: ‘Margaret Busby’s aim in publishing New Daughters of Africa was always to make a real difference. Thanks to the contributors who waived their fees and her own generosity, an African student has taken up a free place to study at SOAS University of London. When Literandra offered us this new opportunity to make a difference, we were delighted to support the initiative. It feels more urgent now than ever to improve the way we share our resources and make books accessible to readers in African countries.’
Responding to the received donations, Sylvia Arthur, Founder of LOATAD said: ‘This donation is a fantastic example of what can be done to support the availability of contemporary, culturally-relevant literature in Africa. We’re grateful to Literandra and Myriad Editions for their commitment to this cause and hope it sets an example for other [literary organisations] to follow.’
In 2019, Literandra organised two UK literary events in support of LOATAD (formerly Libreria Ghana). To support the work that Sylvia and her team are doing in Ghana, please consider making a book or monetary donation. You can also support Literandra by making donations here.
